Neil Patel’s 5 Powerful Keyword Research Tips

Keyword Research Tip #1:

Choose a niche – Sure, you could go after big terms like auto insurance, SEO, and credit cards. But keep in mind that it takes 6 months to gain any traction with Google, 12 months for your traffic go up, and two years to see real success. The key is to go after smaller niches.

Keyword Research Tip # 2

Use buzzwords that are trending – With innovations in technology occurring so quickly, our digital world is continually changing. That means you need to go after forward-thinking words. Turn to Google Trends to determine whats hot and what’s waiting in the wings. It’s a good idea to go after these keyword terms because they’re not too competitive yet. Creating content around new, up-and-coming keywords will help shoot you to the top of the search rankings a lot faster than if you went after more tired terms like “credit cards.”

Keyword Research Tip #3:

Use Ubersuggest to find keywords – We live in a day and age when, instead of searching for “dog food”, people search for keywords like, “what dog food is best for my dog”. Ubersuggest shows you different variations of your primary keyword, as well as how competitive they are, their potential search volume, and how many people will click on your listing based on your rankings.

Keyword Research Tip #4

Take advantage of Quora – Simply type in keywords related to your industry, and you’ll see the most popular questions people are asking. This will tell you what kind of content you need to create. Create content on your blog that addresses the questions you saw on Quora, but be more thorough and detailed. You’ll not only rank for it, but you’ll rank higher because of the depth and detail of your information.

Keyword Research Tip # 5

Emphasize a theme – If you want to get long tail traffic, you need to create detailed content about specific individual topics. For example,  “how to start an e-commerce site with Shopify.”

Creating a 10,000-word blog post on setting up an e-commerce site up with Shopify or Magento will help you attract anyone interested in that topic, as well as those potentially interested in hiring consultants or buying whatever you’re selling related to that topic. When you create pages that are super thorough and detailed, you’ll start ranking for all the keywords related to your industry.

And there you have it, from the online marketing master himself…5 ways to significantly improve your keyword research and rank better on Google in 2018!
